Dunlouise Native Angus® Tartan

Although the Scot’s did not invent tartan, it has been part of our history since the 3rd century, and no where has made it part of their culture like Scotland!

Whilst tartan was worn in many parts of Scotland, it was the Celts in the Highlands that developed the theme, becoming synonymous with the symbol of clan kinship. … A simple woven woollen cloth of checks or tartans were worn by the people of the district where they were made, and as such became the area or clan tartan.

The origins of the kilt date back to the 1500s and when the weather got colder the Scots started bringing a multipurpose blanket with them. Some canny Scot figured out that, if he belted the blanket around his waist, it freed up his hands.
Today, Scottish clans are celebrated across the world, with many descendants making the pilgrimage to Scotland to discover their roots and ancestral home. Clans names, tartans and crests are recorded by Lord Lyon for official recognition.

In 2017 we at Dunlouise created our own tartan to celebrate our on farm sale. It was made here in Forfar at the Strathmore Woollen Mill and designed to reflect the county of Angus, where our iconic cattle originated.

As with all tartans the Dunlouise tartan tells our story:

• Purple for our heather covered hills
• Blue for the North Sea
• White for our snow topped mountains
• Green for our lush green grass on which we can raise our Native Angus
• Raspberry for the soft fruit that grows in the valley of Strathmore

Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle was home to the late Queen Mother and is only a 10 minute drive from our farm; well worth a visit and joining a 50 minute castle tour. Kingston Farm is a 45 minute drive from St Andrews, the famous home of golf, and a 25 minute drive from the course at Carnoustie.
